Biography
Dr. Danny Ramzy, MD, PhD, FRCSC, is the surgical director of the Lung Transplant Program and the Director of the Extracorporeal Life Support program at Cedars-Sinai.  He is a board certified cardiothoracic surgeon at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute specializing in heart and lung transplantation, mechanical assist support as well as minimally invasive aortic valve replacements, minimally invasive mitral valve repairs and replacements and ascending aortic aneurysm and dissection.
 
Dr. Ramzy has won numerous awards during his surgical training.  In collaboration with Dr. Vivek Rao, he pioneered a novel technique to preserve donor hearts prior to transplantation. Using supplemented donor blood harvested at the time of organ procurement, Drs. Ramzy and Rao demonstrated that their novel technique of heart protection significantly improved function following transplantation.
 
In addition to serving as a clinical investigator, Dr. Ramzy is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Canada.  He is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.  He holds memberships in the American Heart Association, the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation, the Canadian Cardiovascular Society and is an associate member of the Canadian Society of Transplantation.
 
After earning his medical degree at McMaster University in Canada, Dr. Ramzy completed an internship and junior residency in general surgery at the University of Toronto.  He earned his doctor of philosophy degree in medical science there, where he served as chief resident.  Dr. Ramzy went on to complete a cardiothoracic surgery residency and a fellowship in transplant and mechanical assist devices at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.  He also is fellowship trained in thoracic surgery.
Research Interest

Dr. Ramzy has written numerous research articles for peer reviewed publications such as the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Transplant, the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation, Circulation, the Journal of Cardiac Surgery and more.  He has lectured at conferences and has co-authored more than 85 abstracts.  He has been an invited book reviewer for the Journal of Cardiac Surgery’s “Heart Transplantation”, the Journal of Thoracic Surgery and Cardiovascular Surgery’s “Myocardial Protection” and the Annals of Thoracic Surgery’s “Handbook of Cardiac Anatomy, Physiology and Devices”.
