Acute rheumatic fever is prevalent across the world and carries a high mortality and morbidity predominantly due to its complication of carditis. The underlying pathogenesis involves a complex interaction between the infective agent and the immune system. Traditionally, management has focused on preventing recurrent infections by prophylactic antibiotics.
