Following an internship at Teaching Hospital – Ratnapura, Dr Dharmagunawardene was appointed as the In Charge Medical Officer of a Rural Hospital in Sri Lanka in 2002. Subsequently, he was selected to follow the Masters in Medical Administration and upon successful completion was appointed as Medical Superintendent of Base Hospital – Dambadeniya. Dr Dharmagunawardene served there as the Head of the Institution for almost 3.5 years. Then was selected for the Doctorate in Medical Administration and upon successful completion, he did his post MD fellowship in one of the JCI accredited hospitals in Singapore – Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Upon return to Sri Lanka, he was assigned the duties of Deputy Director – Training and Director – Training of Education, Training and Research Unit of Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka. Dr Dharmagunawardene served there for almost 3 years. Then he was posted as the Deputy Regional Director of Health Services, Matara District, where he has the responsibility of overall management of primary and secondary care of the said district. Currently he is serving as the Director – Medical Services in Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka. He was also awarded the Post Graduate Certificate in Medical Education. Dr Dharmagunawardene has had more than 50 scientific presentations in conferences and publications including in international peer reviewed journals.
