Dr. Silvana Barros is a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Periodontology, Center for Oral and Systemic Diseases, School of Dentistry at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). Dr Barros received her DDS in 1986. She earned her Masters Degree in Oral Pathology in 1992 and PhD in Oral Biology in 1995 from University of Campinas, Brazil. She received post doc trainning at NIDCR-NIH from 1996-1997. The overall objective of her laboratory is on basic and clinical research examining the relationships between oral infection and the risk for systemic diseases with focus in the role of epigenetics in the pathogenesis of human diseases.
The overall interest of the laboratory is to investigate the interferences and exposures that underlie the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases and the link between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease, preterm low birthweight infants and diabetes.
