Pediatrics is the branch of medicine that involves the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends people be under pediatric care up to the age of 21. A medical doctor who specializes in this area is known as a pediatrician, or paediatrician. I wanted to become a pediatrician because it captured my heart. I always enjoyed being around children. They are fun, playful, sincere and very trusting. ... Unfortunately, most children are not able to help themselves, especially when they are sick, so I decided that I wanted to help them through medicine. Parents whose children are sick enough to be hospitalized are often stressed out, sleep deprived and understandably emotional. This frustration can lead to tense conversations with pediatricians. Dr. Lloyd says empathy and strong communication skills are important in these situations. For a child born as a preemie, with a birth defect, or who has other health concerns, you may want to choose a pediatrician. Some babies need to see a pediatric specialist, a doctor focused on a particular area of health for children.
