The paper analyses the determinants of out-of-pocket health expenditures (OOPE) in Mexico. We compare socio-economic characteristics and geographic information of the locality, such as distance between households and pharmacies, using Geographical Information System (GIS) for different health services: social security, doctorâ??s offices adjacent to private pharmacies, Minister of Health, and private doctorâ??s offices. We conduct a cross-sectional analysis using two different sources, the 2012 National Survey of Mexican Household Income and Expenditures and the 2012 National Health and Nutrition Survey. OOPE for medicines, outpatient and inpatient care services, and the probability of occurrence are estimated using linear regression models where the Heckman selection procedure is used to correct for self-selection of health expenditures.
Luis C. Rodríguez Ortiz has over eight years of combined professional experience in asset management, corporate finance, credit research, and big data analytics. He received his MBA in Finance from Tulane University in 2010 and a B.A. in Financial Management from Tecnológico de Monterrey in 2007. He currently serves as a Project Manager at the Stamford Health System’s Analytics and Innovation department, a multidisciplinary team that has been instrumental in creating and developing a centralized “data center” for the hospital while playing a key role in developing and executing a vast variety of process improvement strategies.
