Therapy effi ciency plays a great role in treatment of iron defi ciency anemia (IDA). It allows reconsideration of diagnoses at the early stages and, if necessary, treatment adjustment. A conducted randomized prospective clinical study included 60 children and adolescents aged 1 to 17 years with IDA of varying severity. At fi rst, all patients were stratifi ed to 3 groups depending on severity, then within each group patients were randomized in the following way: Th e 1st group (n=30) received iron(III) hydroxide polymaltose complex, the 2nd group (n=30) received ferric sulfate. Th e following criteria were used as early response criteria: Blood reaction and blood indices measured at days 7-10 from the baseline, increase in Hb and hematocrit concentrations by the end of the 4th week of treatment. Study results confi rmed that reticulocytes (Ret) count, average reticulocyte hemoglobin content (CHr) and diff erence between CHr and average erythrocyte Hb count are the earliest criteria of response to therapy with iron preparations.
