Abstract :

Background: 20 to 26 sessions of facial and intra-oral acupuncture treatment at Clinic (Seoul, Korea) over 3 months, acupuncture demonstrated changes in the nasofacial angle, nasomental angle, nasolabial angle, nasofrontal angle and mento-cervical angle. This shows the potential for acupuncture in correcting skeletal deviations such as facial asymmetry and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. This study attempts to demonstrate the effectiveness of oral and facial acupuncture in restoring the skeletal position by correcting the imbalance in muscle strength and allowing it to recover its normal position without external force. Objective: This study investigated the effectiveness and safety of oral and facial acupuncture treatment for facial asymmetry and TMJ disorders. Methods: Morpheus 3D scanner (Morpheus CO., Seoul, Korea) was used to evaluate the improvement of facial and skull correction. 3D imaging analysis was conducted on 2 females and 2 males who exhibited facial asymmetry and TMJ disorder. Pre-and-post treatment 3D facial scans were obtained. Finally, a merging process reconstructed three images from different views into one 3D image. Results: Morpheus 3D Scanner demonstrated quantitative changes in facial profile after oral and facial acupuncture. Change in the measurement of the 3D picture illustrates that there were significant alterations in the lateral angles of the 4 patients. Altered areas were the nasofacial angle, nasomental angle, nasolabial angle, nasofrontal angle, and mento-cervical angle. Also, the color changes in the 3D scan revealed the skeletal changes of the left and right side of the face. Adverse effects were not observed. Conclusion: Combined treatment of oral and facial acupuncture is a safe and effective therapy for correcting facial asymmetry and TMJ disorders.
