Drosophila Melanogaster

A fly distributed worldwide with the exception of extremes of altitude or latitude is Drosophila melanogaster. It is found usually in close association with human habitation. They are small in size and easily reared in the laboratory for  research work. They have short life cycle and a new generation of adult flies can be produced every two weeks.
