Iodine is a trace element found in the human body, which is involved in the synthesis of thyroid hormones. Iodine is vital for growth and development, deficiency may result in many growth abnormalities. Variation of thyroid hormones results in either hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. Decrease levels of iodine results in thyroid gland enlargement known as Goiter. Iodine deficiency may lead to various abnormalities like goiter, hypothyroidism, decreased fertility rate, cretinism, and mental retardation.
