Oklahoma Geological Survey

The Geology of Oklahoma is characterized by Carboniferous rocks in the east, Permian rocks in the center and towards the west, and a cover of Tertiary deposits in the pan handle to the west. The Oklahoma Geological Survey considers it very likely that the majority of recent earthquakes, particularly those in central and north-central Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma Geological Survey (OGS) is a state agency for research and public service charged with studying the state’s land, water, mineral and energy resources. Oklahoma maintains one of the nation’s most robust seismic monitoring systems. In fact, OGS began earthquake monitoring 40 years ago with its first seismic station that is still in operation near Leonard, Oklahoma.
