Polymyositis is one of inflammatory myopathies. Chronic muscle inflammation, muscle weakness are the common symptoms. Usually seen in adults between the ages of 31 and 60. One of the reason may be when white blood cells, the immune cells of inflammation, spontaneously invade muscles of the body.
Polymyositis is seen to occur more frequently in women than men with ageing. Women acquire them after the age of 55 while in the case of men, these occur after an age of 45. With ageing, there is deposition of water in the cartilage protein that in turn destructs it. Various other factors like increased levels of uric acid in the blood, mechanical stress on knee joints, or hormonal changes also cause polymyositis.
