It refers to accessing the genetic profile of embryo before implantation and sometimes oocyte before fertilization. It is similar to pre-natal diagnosis. It avoids babies from having genetic diseases as it suggests hints to doctors prior to birth. Hence, PGD is used as an adjunct in all assisted reproductive techniques. For example, during IVF treatment, the oocyte and embryo are evaluated using PGD prior to use.
