According to the European Medicines Agency; Biomarker is defined as 'measurable characteristics that reflect physiological, pharmacological, or disease processes'. Genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics and imaging analyses are ideal platform for biomarkers discovery. New classes of biomarkers derived from mass spectroscopy analysis of the low molecular weight proteome have shown improved abilities in the early detection of disease and hence in patient risk stratification and outcome. Biomarkers are used to improve the patient condition by the so-called personalized medicine approaches.
