Tribology is the study of interacting surfaces in relative motion. This includes lubrication, lubricating oils and greases, contact mechanics, friction, wear, surface damage, surface modifications and coatings. Tribology includes chemists, physicists, material scientists, chemical engineers and mechanical engineers. Current research areas include lubricant chemistry, surface coating technology, hydrodynamic and elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication, contact mechanics, wear and surface fatigue.
The science of Tribology (Greek tribos: rubbing) concentrates on Contact Mechanics of Moving Interfaces that generally involve energy dissipation. It encompasses the science fields of Adhesion, Friction, Lubrication and Wear. Some pioneers brought tribology to a standard, and its laws still apply to many engineering problems today.
