The Hypothalamus releases a substance called thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) which stimulates the production of TSH by the pituitary gland. A thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) blood test is performed to check for thyroid gland related problems. TSH causes the thyroid gland to produce two hormones namely triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4).
